A person with a sex addiction engages in behavior that is often unsafe, emotionally unhealthy, and painful. The personal and professional consequences can be devastating for the individual, as well as for his or her family.
The "secret life" that is frequently a feature of sex addiction can lead to a breakup of personal relationships, dangerous health risks, career crises, and financial disaster.
Factors often associated with sexual addiction include:
- Unresolved emotional issues; feelings of shame, loneliness, low self-esteem, and lack of self-confidence
- Re-enactement of earlier traumas or sexual abuse
- Deep anxiety
- Conflict and stress
- Uncontrolled and chaotic feelings
- Acting out
- Undiagnosed underlying disorders that can contribute to compulsive sexual behavior, such as Depression, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bipolar Disorder, and coping mechanisms
The aim of our work together will be to recognize and explore the needs and urges that underlie the addictive behavior.
Particular attention will be given to the influence of the internet, which so profoundly affects twenty-first century interpersonal relationships, sexual behavior not least among them.
